There is nothing more to this B-plot than an example of a Precocious Crush (TVtropes), and an interesting look at how Future Trunks interacts with people he knows in the future that died, just like his situation with Gohan. Trunks and Goten were disappointed by this, and though they competed anyway, they also found a way to compete in the adult's division as well. She'd have memories about her past life, she'd know more things, and maybe have more perspective on some stuff, but she's also going to be a pre-pubescent girl in a lot of ways emotionally.
Of course, the craziest thing of all is that their fusion reflects the fusion that their fathers would eventually pull to fight Super Buu. They have similar age now. This timeline got even worse in Dragon Ball Super when Trunks witnessed his mother's death at the hands of Goku Black. They shall be looooove. They might as well ship Goten and Marron? Trunks chopped the poor guy in the neck using his Saiyan strength (which had to have hurt) and knocked him out cold. Thanks to the dragon balls, wishing someone back to life has become pretty commonplace. When they had the Kid Trunks and "Kid" Mai interactions in the original Battle of Gods movie, I thought it was just amusing and silly since it was, you know, just a joke and Mai clearly had no interest in Trunks due to technically being so much older than him.

The omni-king decided to rid the universe of this rogue timeline and just straight up erased it from existence. There is also the present, main timeline version of Bulma and Vegeta's son. Goku just being in the room doesn't take away from the character. It's simple, really, as this screencap proves.
We say would because after using the dragon balls to wish for youth, Mai, Shu and Pilaf were turned back into kids. Goten and Bra were grossed out looking at her. User Info: bobaban. Vegeta actually turns out to be a pretty good family man and the couple eventually had a second child. Mai seems to have given up on her evil ways and has even started to form a relationship with Trunks. Throughout both this arc and the Revival F arc, they were treated as they are, kids. Eh, I'm not against Goten x Marron, but I sort of ship Goten x Valese way more, if I'm being honest. This relationship seems to be inching towards something deeper with their future selves, a fact made incredibly creepy knowing that she is a grown woman in a child's body. Though the Z-fighters and Trunks himself don't seem to think twice about this, it is actually a great taboo. He got to have a normal childhood without the constant threat of androids attacking the Earth. I'm just bothered that Toriyama could've made a new female character. IIRC Mai is 3 years older than Bulma (at least till she turned into a child).

Trunks and Goten are the youngest Super Saiyans in Dragon Ball Z, able to transform at such a young age perhaps because they are half human.

Most of the characters in Akira Toriyama's world are named after puns of some sort. Good thing both his parents are so stubborn, or else he'd be a lot worse. Honestly I think that when the Pilaf Gang used the dragon balls to make themselves younger, she regressed not just biologically, but emotionally and mentally as well - I think she had to grow up all over again and couldn't even remember her time as an adult.

Anyone extrapolating anything more from their interactions is looking for something that just isn't there. After the androids were released, the world fell victim to their immense power, and after Goku died from a heart virus, every last powerful warrior on Earth was killed, leaving only Gohan and Trunks to make attempts at fighting back against their cyborg oppressors. The disguise they got was stolen from one of the participants, a fighter by the name of Mighty Mask.
