My Review: When is a road book not a road book? This is not rape as sex but rape as brutal violence. The good parts of this movie, apparently inspired by a true story, makes me wish it was better as a whole. I saw this movie on tv and at times you almost have to force yourself not to change channels. Was the house good to you? I applaud this movie for taking risks and for raising questions about human behavior. I guess an immoral person, probably wouldn't get the message either way, but for the moral, you understand why it's such a hideous crime. I had hoped this would be good but it took my breath away. Owen prematurely ejaculates due to the trauma and has trouble getting close to people because he was sexually abused by his much older brother. And it has a great sound track! Meanwhile, Sherry continues her wayward, uneasy path through life, going through the court-mandated motions of attending thirty A.A. meetings in thirty days while still drinking hard and engaging in extremely risky sexual encounters (in one of the film's most uncomfortable scenes, she has a tryst with two men, demanding that one hold her arms back while the other attempts to consummate the implied promise of the evening). After several disappointing films, Allison Anders has made a nother personal film that thematically is linked with her first (and best) feature, Gas Food Lodging. I took this as a double rape even though one character was technically the rapist. This is a very honest, painful movie and perhaps the best thing is the ending. And I also applaud the performances and the writing. Whenever a writer or director chooses to tell a literal tale of deep personal significance, it tends to either alienate or endear its potential audience. I do not know what Showtime had to deal with in terms of the original elements, but the presentation is disappointing. I didn't. Extras: Showtime is to be congratulated for giving this release a host of interesting, worthwhile extras. That the film may prove more valuable to some - and operate on a deeper, more resonant level - than a mere "movie" attests to its overall power. This is the frightening true story of a rape and its terrible aftermath. There is a feature-length commentary with Anders, co-writer Kurt Voss, and producer Daniel Hassid. Go and see it! An Extraordinary Film From Allison Anders, Honest, emotional, and even redemptive ( a must see for rape victim caregivers). the most profound film on the topic of rape I've ever seen...
